Gubs: A Game of Wit and Luck

Game Publisher: Gamewright

Game Designers: Cole and Alex Medeiros
Players: 2-6

Ages: 10+

_____________

Gubs is a great card game. It is kin to Sleeping Queens (a One Zillion Games family favorite), Guillotine and collectible card games such as Magic the Gathering.

The goal of this game is simple: Gubs - you want them! Once you have them (steal them if you have to), protect them. When the game is over, the one with the most Gubs wins.

There are ways to steal cards, discard cards, destroy things, protect things, keep players from playing the cards they want, and more. It may seem a little daunting at first, but play it through a few times and you will have the mechanics down pat.

This is another game where my 1st grader is under the recommended playing age, but thoroughly enjoys playing. He was instantly drawn to the artwork of this game. He had no idea what was in the tin, but BOY did he want to play it!

There is reading involved; each of the cards plays a very specific role in the game and that role is explained at the bottom of each card.

As with teaching any kids a game, patience is key. Let them take their time to read, ask questions, etc.  Play a few hands open faced. Play as a team of 2 against an opponent.

If you are interested in trying it out before for yourself first, you can play the Gubs Pixel Edition against 2 computer opponents. While not as fun as playing in real life against real opponents, it is a good way to get a feel for the game. You can download the Pixel Edition from the Gubs web site.

Another thing I like about Gubs? I'm a sucker for a back story and the creation of Gubs (from 4th grade doodles) is a good one. Game designer Cole Medeiros does a much better job recounting it than I could on their web site.

Need another reason to check out Gubs? It was recently awarded with a 2011 Platinum Best Toy Award from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio.

One Zillion Games was provided with a review copy of Gubs: A Game of Wit and Luck from Gamewright. The fact that a sample copy was provided, in no way influences our opinions of the game.
