Hagoth: Builder of Ships

Game Designer: Mike Drysdale

Game Publisher: Mayday Games

Players: 2-4

Ages: 8+

Hagoth: Builder of Ships Rules: - "Please note the rules should state that you can discard 2 cards and draw 2 new ones as your action as well, or play one card and discard one card, and then draw two new ones." - Mayday Games.

First of all, I would like to say how disappointed I was NOT to find "Take off shirt and wear a loin cloth-y thing" in the rules (I've got two words for you: house rules).

You and the other players are apprentices to the Master Shipbuilder, Hagoth and you are each competing to claim the title of Builder of Ships.

How does one become a Builder of Ships? By building ships of course.

The main game play components of the game are cards.  There are two types of cards; action cards and blueprint cards. The game play follows a very logical path (at least what I assume is logical since I have no actual ship building experience): Complete a blue print, collect wood, build ship, sail ship. Since it is a cut-throat competition, the path can be a bumpy one.  Sometimes you can lose blueprint pieces or built sections of your ships, or sometimes your sailing ship can be delayed and set back from its destination.

Now, here comes the strategy. You can build little ships that are built quickly and reach their destination in a snap (and are worth very few points) or you can build large ships (worth a lot points). Speaking of points, I like the way the points are split up; you get some points for completing the ship and even more points for actually having your ship be seaworthy enough to complete its journey.

The first player to 25 points wins the game.

OZG Kid's score: 8 points - My daughter rated learning the rules as "between easy and hard to learn - closer to easy."

OZG Grown-ups score: 8 points

One Zillion Games was provided with a review copy of Hagoth: Builder of Ships. The fact that a sample copy was provided, in no way influences our opinions of the game.
